Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long beach on the 24th of August, 1972. Her aunt Denise was a great influence on her enthusiasm for artistic expression and creative thinking. She worked as a night nurse to allow her aunt the time she needed throughout the day for the love of art, literature, as well as theatre. DuVernay became enamored with the 1961 film West Side Story after her aunt showed it to DuVernay. DuVernay was educated by her mother about how the arts can serve to engage people. She went to the University of California Los Angeles for a degree in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay discovered a passion for broadcast journalism as a student. DuVernay began her career working as an intern at CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was appointed to look-out and search for the house for a specific juror. Due to her work, she became dissatisfied with journalism, and shifted into the publicity business. DuVernay started her career as a junior publicity assistant in a tiny film studio following her graduation from the college. Her private PR company, The DuVernay Agency was established in 1999.
